Questions About Wisconsin Rapids

Yes it’s true! The city is a consolidation of the two early towns of Grand Rapids and Centralia, the former lying on the east side of the Wisconsin River, the latter on the west. The consolidation was effected in the spring of 1900 and the city subsequently bore the name of Grand Rapids until 1920, when its name was changed because freight and mail intended for it was frequently sent by mistake to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Prior to the Wisconsin River being dammed, this area held a treacherous stretch of water, which descended 45 feet as it passed through the community. The American Indians called the area “Ahdawagam”, meaning “Two-sided Rapids” as the rapids here was divided in two by a great boulder. After the river was dammed, the increase in water level covered most of the rocks and boulders and therefore, rapids, in the area.

Although the route is in place year-round, the best time to drive the Cranberry Highway is during the fall harvest season which is late-September through late-October. Depending on the time of day and what beds are currently producing, visitors may see harvesting from the roadside. However, we recommend a guided tour for visitors to ensure a true cranberry experience.

The Menominee, Ojibwe, and Ho-Chunk peoples are among the original inhabitants of Wisconsin Rapids. American Indian people are heterogeneous and their histories differ based on tribal affiliation. If you would like to learn more about tribal lands and their people, click here.

2023 U.S. Senior Open Championship

We are excited to welcome guests as some of the best players in the world compete in the U.S. Senior Open—one of the five major championships in senior golf. Please email us directly for availability: whitehouse@goodnessproperties.com

SentryWorld is proud to host the 43rd U.S. Senior Open Championship from June 29–July 2, 2023. This is the first Senior Open and third USGA championship to be played on our 200-acre parkland course in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

“The U.S. Senior Open is undoubtedly among the most prestigious golf events in the world,” said Mike James, general manager of SentryWorld and vice president of Sentry Services. “With the help of state and local leaders and business and community partners, SentryWorld will provide a world-class experience and environment for players, officials, and fans alike.”

SentryWorld—Wisconsin’s first destination golf course—was developed by Sentry Insurance in 1982 as part of a sports complex that now includes indoor tennis courts, a boutique hotel, banquet space, and restaurants. The 7,320-yard championship golf course was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., who redesigned it in 2013 with on-course architects Bruce Charlton and Jay Blasi. In 2021, Jones and Charlton further renovated the course in preparation for the U.S. Senior Open.
